MadeNorth focuses on the design and manufacture of new, innovative products that have been inspired by the cultural similarities and differences of Scandinavia to that of the North East of England.
The exhibition showcased new work by the artists alongside details of working processes and tools used during the creative process.
This porcelain and wood chair, with incorporated tennis plate (combined saucer and plate) and separate cup, sought to combine functionality with beauty, a feature of Scandinavian design. The tennis plate was inspired by those produced by the centuries old, North East based pottery, Maling.
To reflect Scandinavia’s reputation for being egalitarian, this chair was designed for a minority group – people who are left-handed. It was named after the artist’s sister, who is left-handed.
