Helena Seget (born 1959, lives and works in the UK) is a visual artist working site-specifically with installation and spatial arrangement, focusing on research with and about people who have a heightened sense of awareness - Highly Sensitive People. In her practice, Seget makes use of a spatial modification palette consisting of eleven elements such as Physical Comfort, Canopy, Sound, Air, Light, Plants and more, in order to create immersive installations that enable the subconscious mind of participants to register a space as safe. Using visual and environmental cues to evoke calm, and removing those otherwise impeding it, she frees up the viewers' mind to explore a space without feeling overwhelmed.
Works like Reclamation of Focus I (2022), consists of spatial installations where the process of applying the 11-element spatial palette is guided by the sensations derived from the elements, such as lighting and positioning of furniture. Minute attention to detail is given to assessing them in this way, both individually and collectively, in combination with the inherent features of the space being used, ultimately allowing visitors to experience extreme peace and unfettered focus on the present moment.
By meticulously thinking about the elements forming a living space, Seget questions the way our mind has had to quickly adapt to the artificial environments of urban areas over the past 300 years, following the exponential growth of the world’s population and the multiplication of intensely built environments like supercities. Her work suggests a reclamation of agency by the viewer, who becomes an active element of Seget's installations.
