William Burrell, a wealthy 19th-century shipowner from Hutton Castle, donated part of his renowned art collection to Berwick. When selected works were exhibited, Berwick Visual Arts commissioned five artists to create responses, with one piece from each artist added to their collection.
Helena Seget was captivated by Jacob Maris’s ‘Washing Day,’ one of the exhibition’s most popular pieces. The poetic movement of the wind billowing the fabric reminded her of sacred prayer cloths seen in the Himalayas during a trip to India.
Through experimenting with clay, Seget translated this sense of movement into porcelain artwork, capturing the smooth flow of linen in the breeze. The coolness of porcelain beautifully reflects the feel of crisp linen dried in the open air.
